In three sentences—What is a design system?

A design system is a structured collection of components—the building blocks of digital products—along with accompanying guidelines. It exists both as code and in the design tool used to create the product, defining how a brand or product looks and behaves across platforms. The goal is to make the development and design of user interfaces more efficient and consistent.

Why are design systems so important for modern businesses and digital products?

Design systems offer a wide range of benefits. They allow for flexible adaptation to rebranding processes or scaling, save time and costs in development and maintenance, and ensure a consistent user experience. Centralized systems make global changes more efficient and support coherent communication. In the long run, they enhance usability, raise quality standards, and increase cost efficiency.

Another crucial aspect of modern design systems is accessibility. Digital products should be accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities or limitations. Inclusive design not only enhances the user experience for people with disabilities, but also improves overall usability and comprehension. Factors such as color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and clear content are not just nice-to-have features; they are essential components of high-quality digital solutions.

At muse case, we specialize in developing design systems with a strong focus on accessibility. We help businesses create inclusive and sustainable digital products that not only comply with current legal standards but also improve usability for everyone. Our team combines deep UX/UI design expertise with extensive knowledge of digital accessibility, ensuring that we build products truly usable by all.

Can you share one or two examples where design systems played a critical role?

Examples of successful design systems where muse case played a key role include the STIHL Design System and the Porsche Design System. In both cases, our expertise not only supported the development of these systems but also ensured their seamless integration into the respective products.

We deliver comprehensive design systems developed in various programming languages, such as React and Angular.js, providing our clients with maximum flexibility and scalability. The results speak for themselves: consistent user experiences, efficient development processes, and high-quality, future-proof products.

Another remarkable example of the impact of a design system is our TK Schulsoftware project—a school planning and administration software that we co-developed at muse case in UX design and software development. In this project, the design system was created in parallel with the first product’s development. As the second product was introduced, the system was expanded and later became the primary focus of the product’s evolution.

Thanks to well-structured, reusable components, significant time savings were achieved in both design and development. The result was two seamlessly integrated products—not only in terms of service continuity but also in user experience and efficiency in product development.

How do I know if I need a design system?

A design system becomes relevant as soon as a digital product exists—whether it’s a website, an app, or an online shop. Such a system is beneficial regardless of the company’s size or the project’s scope. It serves as a central framework that streamlines development processes, enhances collaboration between design and development teams, and ensures consistency across all product areas.

Especially in fast-paced industries or for companies looking to grow and scale, a design system is particularly advantageous. It enables the efficient reuse of components, reduces redundant work, and ensures a cohesive user experience. When products are expanded or new features introduced, a design system provides the necessary flexibility and scalability to seamlessly implement these changes.

As a brand or marketing manager, implementing a design system as part of a refresh or a complete rebranding of an organization can be a strategic and impactful decision. In such cases, a design system provides the foundation for consistently implementing the new brand identity across all digital and physical touchpoints. It ensures that the new branding is communicated uniformly across all products—from websites and mobile apps to marketing materials. Additionally, it ensures that all teams work with the same design guidelines, accelerating the implementation process and avoiding potential inconsistencies. By introducing a design system during a rebranding process, brand perception is strengthened, and team efficiency is significantly increased, as design and development teams no longer need to start from scratch for every project.

How do you integrate a design system into an existing organization, and when is the right time?

The best time to start is as early as possible. An initial investment pays off in the long run through more efficient development and maintenance. A brand relaunch or redesign is an ideal opportunity to introduce a design system, as it naturally involves defining new visual and structural standards.

The integration ideally begins with a small task force that analyzes the status quo and requirements. From there, the process starts agilely with the basics and is gradually expanded. Regular communication and involvement of all stakeholders are essential to ensure a smooth implementation and seamlessly integrate the design system into existing workflows.

What are the biggest challenges in integration?

The biggest challenge is the collaboration between the design system, product, and development teams. Different workflows and a lack of clear processes often lead to delays. Another critical issue is timing: When does the design system team take over, and when does the product team step in? A clear distribution of responsibilities is crucial.

What trends do you see in the field of design systems?

I believe that the gap between “Figma design systems” and “code design systems” is getting smaller—perhaps even disappearing entirely. Tools like Figma are evolving rapidly, and I expect that we will soon be able to export design components directly into code environments like Storybook.

At the same time, I see automation and AI as key drivers shaping the future of design systems. AI-powered tools can streamline and accelerate processes like component creation, design validation, and accessibility checks.

Another major trend is the growing importance of multi-channel design systems. Companies need to scale their designs consistently across web, mobile, smart devices, and other platforms. A strong design system ensures that users experience a cohesive and accessible user experience everywhere.

Does muse case offer training for clients or internal teams to maximize the benefits of design systems?

Yes, we offer training and workshops to explain design systems and their benefits. Many businesses don’t fully understand how much they can gain from a design system, so we focus on breaking down barriers and highlighting the long-term value of these systems. Our goal is to make the investment feel accessible and worthwhile.
